Here’s a great article by Mike Koerner about measuring your swimming efficiency. This is one of the things that I tend to preach about. I like to define efficiency as using less energy to go the same speed, or better yet, going faster with the same amount of effort/energy. Triathletes really understand the importance of this, as we have to bike and run afterwards, so we can’t empty the tank on the swim. Additionally, even our “sprint” distance triathlon swims tend to be anything but a sprint.
